2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 outlines what a preacher does and the authoritative sources from which the preacher derives authority. Before consulting this text, consider the following: What is the main purpose of preaching? What makes a sermon good? How does a congregation worship God while listening to preaching? Now compare your answers to 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5. What (if anything) was missing?
Two important ways to prepare for preaching: 1) spend time pondering over the text; 2) spend time praying for the preacher and those who will hear the message.
If interested, I’m attaching some Morning/Evening Prayers John Wesley wrote for each day of the week. Although I find a few things disagreeable theologically, they are in the main great prayers that can be read individually or with families (simply change “I” to “we”; “me” to “us” and so on). Personally, I’ve found they are great at making prayer habitual and for broadening my prayers to focus on things I normally don’t.
