I Timothy 1:3-11
Don’t like homework? How about some home-fun?! Read 1 Timothy 1:3-11 by itself a few times.
- Pray over the text.
- Reconstruct the original situation as best you can. Step 4 will help here. Who is Paul’s original audience? What’s their situation? What point is he trying to make to them in the passage you’re reading?
- Jot down anything unclear, interesting or challenging. For example, where is Macedonia/Ephesus? Why does Paul begin his letter by talking about false teaching? (Must be a matter of importance since he puts it first.) What does Paul mean by myths and genealogies (v. 3), law (v. 8), righteous (v. 8)? Etc.
- Then, read the passage in the context of 1 Timothy as a whole, making use of the PowerPoint slides from Bible study a few days ago (Slides 10-12 are relevant here – see step 6 below).
- Now revisit steps 1-4 and refine your questions/answers. Consider personal application at this point, using the original situation and original main point or points to guide you.
